Why did Dream11 stop paid contests?
India's Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, which took effect in August 2025, banned all real-money online games in India — fantasy sports included. Dream11, with roughly 230 million registered users, ended paid contests rather than fight the law and rebuilt itself as a free sports-entertainment app. The ban is being challenged before India's Supreme Court, but the court has not paused it: as of July 2026 the law is fully in force, with the next hearing set for August 5, 2026.
