BBL fantasy in the USA: the Big Bash League, 2026-27
The Big Bash League is Australia's summer T20 league, and for US fans it is night-owl cricket: most games start around 3:15 a.m. Eastern. BBL|16 runs from December 12, 2026 to the final on January 26, 2027. Fantasy works the way it does for any T20 league: build a squad under a salary cap, pick a captain and vice-captain, and follow the points live. Runtiva runs cricket contests on match days for the competitions listed in the app, so check the app as the season approaches.
What is the Big Bash League?
The BBL is Cricket Australia's franchise T20 competition, played through the Australian summer. Eight teams take part: the Adelaide Strikers, Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes, Melbourne Renegades, Melbourne Stars, Perth Scorchers, Sydney Sixers, and Sydney Thunder. In the US cricket calendar it follows the Caribbean Premier League and The Hundred, and keeps cricket going through the US winter.
BBL|16 at a glance
- Opener, December 12: Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, India — the first BBL match ever played outside Australia.
- Australian opener, December 15: Brisbane Heat vs Sydney Sixers at the Gabba.
- Holidays: no game on Christmas Day, a Christmas Eve game (Renegades vs Hurricanes at Junction Oval), and double-headers on Boxing Day and New Year's Day.
- Finals: the top four teams play a four-game finals series starting with the Qualifier on January 19, and the final is on Australia Day, January 26, 2027.
- 44 games in all.
What time is the Big Bash in the US?
Most BBL night games start at 7:15 p.m. AEDT in eastern Australia. In December and January that is 3:15 a.m. Eastern, 12:15 a.m. Pacific — the same calendar date in the US. The earlier game on a double-header day starts sooner, and the Chennai opener runs on India time, so check the official fixture for each match. For fantasy, that means one thing: set your lineup before you go to bed, and wake up to the result.
How BBL fantasy works
The familiar cricket format: every player has a price, you pick your XI under a fixed salary cap, and you name a captain (2× points) and vice-captain (1.5×). Points come from runs, boundaries, wickets, economy, and fielding, and on Runtiva they update live. New to it? Start with the fantasy cricket guide, the glossary, or cricket for baseball fans.
The BBL rules that change fantasy
- Designated batter (new for BBL|16). Before the toss, a team may name one designated batter, who bats but does not field or bowl, plus a designated fielder, who may keep wicket but cannot bowl. They swap at the change of innings. A designated batter earns no bowling points and fewer chances at fielding points, so check who each team nominates before you lock.
- Power Surge. The fielding-restricted powerplay at the start of an innings is four overs, and the batting side can call a further two-over Power Surge from the 11th over. Middle-order hitters who bat during the Surge get an extra scoring window.
BBL fantasy strategy
- Respect the venue. Australian grounds vary a lot in size and pace. Pace and bounce reward quick bowlers on some, while others produce big totals — read the recent scores at each ground.
- Captain the top order. Openers face the most balls and bat through the powerplay, making them the steadiest 2× picks in a T20.
- All-rounders are value. Two ways to score for one salary slot — but check that a nominated designated batter isn't your all-rounder.
- Lock in before bed. Overnight start times mean the toss and confirmed teams land while most US players sleep. Build from the probable XIs and leave yourself room for late changes.
